The Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ-IIT) once again became a hub of environmental awareness and academic excellence as it successfully hosted the 3rd Iligan City-Lanao del Norte Provincial Wildlife Quizbowl on October 22, 2025, which brought together 22 schools from across the province for a day of learning and friendly competition.

The event, held at the University Gymnasium, was organized by the Department of Biological Sciences, in collaboration with the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc.(PBCFI), 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ-IIT’s WE CARE Extension Program Office, the Rotary Club Metro Iligan, and the Haynayan Society. The organizing committee highlighted the growing enthusiasm of students and teachers in promoting environmental literacy through academic competitions that encourage learning and teamwork.

The quizbowl tested participants' knowledge of biology, ecology, Philippine wildlife, environmental laws, and biogeography, among other topics. Emerging as the overall champion was 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ-Sultan Naga Dimaporo, scoring an impressive 54 points in the final round. They were followed by the Philippine Science High School - Northern Mindanao Campus with 43 points, and Iligan City National High School, which placed third with 39 points.

Organizers praised the students' enthusiasm and teamwork, noting how the event continues to expand its reach and impact each year. Among the standout participants was Santiago National High School, which placed 6th overall in its first-ever participation in the competition. Represented by Jerry III C. Omping and Alyxyl Phette Dayondon, both Grade 11 HUMSS students and members of The Eureka Science Society, the team earned praise for their strong debut.

Their coach, Sir Febeto Lumosad Potutan Jr., shared in an interview that it was both an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. “It was our first time to join, actually, but I heard about it last year, so I really planned na mag-join this year,” Potutan said. “Kulba sya because wala mi kabalo with my students unsay way or atake sa questions, so what we did was nag-search mi from other provinces na nag-conduct na og Wildlife Quiz Bowl last month and this month. We really started from scratch sa among reviewers,” he remarked.

He also recounted the team’s learning experience with humor, “Typical sa mga quizzers, ga-change-change pod og answers, sakto na unta. Ang uban pod kay kulang og letters or sayop ang spelling…but overall, nalingaw ra sila and told me na bawi gyod daw sila next year.”

As the event concluded, the representatives from 91¾«Æ·ºÚÁϳԹÏ-IIT and collaborating institutions praised the success of this year’s competition, highlighting that it not only celebrated academic excellence but also fostered environmental awareness among the youth. They expressed hope that Provincial Wildlife Quizbowl will continue to grow and encourage wider participation in the coming years.
