The Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT) is steadfast in its pursuit of sustainability and climate action by conducting a comprehensive Energy Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Audit as part of its institutional commitment to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency in the university’s operations. Initiated in 2024, this effort marks a milestone in establishing a robust foundation for 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT’s long-term sustainability agenda.
The research-based rapid assessment was spearheaded by the Office of Monitoring and Evaluation (OME), in collaboration with the School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) and the 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT Center for Resiliency (MCR). This research project aligns with Republic Act No. 11285 (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act), which aims to implement energy efficiency and conservation measures, optimize energy utilization, and offer incentives for related initiatives. This pioneering initiative forms part of the University’s integrated efforts to align its development programs with the national Philippine Greenhouse Gas Inventory Management and Reporting System (PGHGIMRS) and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Quantifying the Institute’s Energy Footprint
The Energy GHG Audit (EGGA) focused on assessing the Institute’s energy consumption patterns, including electricity use from institutional operations. Researchers and project technical staff analyzed data from academic buildings, laboratories, and support facilities to establish 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT's baseline energy consumption and carbon footprint.
The results revealed that high energy consumption remains one of the Institute's major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from electricity sourced from non-renewable grids. The study emphasized the importance of adopting energy-efficient systems, integrating renewable energy, and promoting behavioral energy conservation among the university community.
A Research-Based Approach to Climate Accountability
The audit provides “a data-driven foundation for informed decision-making and future investments in clean energy technologies.” The findings will guide the development of 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT’s Enhanced Campus Climate Change Action Plan (ECCCAP), including proposed energy retrofitting, solar power utilization, and digital monitoring of carbon performance indicators.
The School of Interdisciplinary Studies, represented by faculty researchers specializing in environmental science, electrical engineering, and sustainable development, provided research design and analytical framework. Their contribution ensured the study adhered to international GHG accounting standards, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines and the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.
Partnership Toward Climate Resiliency
The Office of Monitoring and Evaluation coordinated institutional data and reporting mechanisms, ensuring consistency across departments and alignment with the Institute’s strategic Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for environmental sustainability. Meanwhile, the 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT Center for Resiliency facilitated stakeholder engagement and capacity-building sessions to familiarize campus offices with carbon accounting methods and their relevance to disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation planning.
This tripartite collaboration demonstrates 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT’s growing culture of interdisciplinary research and whole-of-institution action for sustainability. It further strengthens the University’s vision of becoming a leading smart, green, and resilient higher education institution in Mindanao.
Next Steps Toward a Carbon-Neutral University
Following the completion of the audit, 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT plans to develop its Campus GHG Dashboard to track energy performance indicators and emission-reduction targets continuously. The results will also feed into the University’s Annual Environmental and Climate Resilience Report to assess our progress towards achieving our goal of a carbon-neutral university and substantially reducing energy costs.
As the University moves toward a carbon-neutral future, the Energy GHG Audit serves as both a diagnostic tool and a call to action—affirming 91精品黑料吃瓜-IIT’s commitment to sustainability, scientific innovation, and environmental stewardship.
